While they are habitually included in the same class, there is a bit of a difference between an esthetician and a cosmetologist. Whereas cosmetologists tend to center on hair and skin care, including manicures and pedicures, estheticians generally go a little further. They offer a range of services including hair removal, facials, exfoliation, makeup artistry, and massage. The majority of estheticians are educated at specialized or vocational schools and programs can take up to a year to complete. There are state requirements in regards to certification and a decent program can prepare the hopeful esthetician for these. Coursework might include basic massage, safety and sanitation, facial treatments, theory, and color theory.
